Welcome/ How to Navigate

Hello and welcome to my PPD for term three. I tried to organize my site so that it is clear and easy to view the different aspects of my work for this term. In this post you can find out how to easily navigate my site!

How to view my progression work: In the top right corner press one of the buttons labeled progression work. This page will show all my experiments/ test shots/ class work for both the PR package and Zine.

How to view my responses from each session: Above this post you will see that there are two categories (Adobe Sessions and Studio Session). Press one of the categories to view the posts related to the category.

Hope you enjoy.

Evaluation

I started my project once I had bought a few vintage Seventeen magazines from the nineteen-sixties and seventies at a flea market in Paris. Upon looking through them I realized how misogynistic and sexist some of the advertisements were. I decided that for my zine I was going to respond to them, so that is how it all began. I knew the best way for me to respond to my concept was through photography and using mixed-media collages. I think through using photography and collages, I was able to clearly communicate my concept, because they play off each other to directly respond to the sexism and misogyny in the adverts. I think that I did accomplish most of the goals that I set out for when creating my zine. The aesthetic I thought I was going to do ended up being slightly different than the one I have for my zine. I think at first I wanted something softer/ dreamier, but I think the more ‘punky’ aesthetic I went with fit my zine concept much more. My method of using tights over my camera lens came out very well, so I was excited about that. I could have done more collages, but I am happy with the outcomes I had. I think more collages would have fit the other aesthetic more than the one I went with.

For this zine I do not think I would change much. If I were to change anything, I think it would be to develop my concept more, however with the short time we had I think I did a good job. I think that I could have included more writing, so that is something to improve on in the future. Through this project I learned that time management is everything for me. In the past I really struggled with that, however for this project I really think I improved on my time management. By doing this I allowed myself more time to develop my ideas properly, instead of rushing to get everything done. I also learned how important collaborating can be. Coming together with other creatives can make your work so much better. For example I am horrible at writing, so I included a written piece from one of my friends who studies journalism. This collaboration worked very well because while writing may be my weakness, it is her strength, which strengthens my content.

I think that my portfolio does show my BA choice quite clearly. My zine is very concept based and you can see that throughout the zine. In order to keep developing my skills, I need to continue to experiment and do research. Through this project I realized how important research is, because that is how I got my concept.

I received feedback about how one of my shoots did not fit my new zine aesthetic and about my zine name. I completely agree with both of these. The shoot that did not fit was one I did before I fully knew exactly what direction I was going in. I think that in the future I definitely will be able to recognize things like this. It is important to be critical about my own work, in order to improve the quality.

Overall I am very pleased with how this project came out. As mentioned earlier I felt that while working on this project, I improved a lot on my time management, which I am very happy about. I think that my strengths are my work, I just have to get better at time management, so that I have the time to do my best. Seeing improvements already helps a lot, however I know I still could be better, so it is something I will continue to work on.

Session 11

In this session we discussed how to hand-in and had time to work on our evaluation. During a time when we are all so stressed about getting our work done before hand-in, it is nice to have classes like these where we get time to work and can meet with the tutors for advice. I stayed pretty focussed during class and got a good amount of work done on my evaluation, which I am very proud of, since I have struggled trying to get my written work done in class. Overall I felt very prepared for this class. I am at a good place in terms of how much more work I have left, so that feels nice to not be too stressed before hand-in. I would not have changed anything with how this class went.

Adobe Session 4

This was our final adobe session. We started out the class learning something new on illustrator and then did a peer review. We also had time to work on our personal work before the peer review. I found the task on illustrator fairly easy. I am sad to be done with this class. It was really nice to have this class to teach us all about the adobe programs and how to use them. It has been amazing to watch my skills grow on these programs. Being somewhat proficient with these programs has definitely helped me when doing my other work on this course and will be knowledge I will use throughout my career as a student and professional. The end of this class made me sad to be done with this course. I will miss everyone. Overall this was a great and sentimental session.

What I made during class.

Session 10 Peer Review

This session was a peer review session for our my blogs. This was very beneficial for me because I was able to not only get feedback from my peers, but also see their work, which helped show me what I need to add and gather inspiration on ways to improve my site. All my feedback except Carlyn’s was very positive and did not mention anything to change, which I wish it did. There is always room to improve so I wish I received more advice and feedback about things I could improve. Carlyn’s advice was very helpful and made me realize that I have to upload my stuff from padlet and change a part of my introduction post. I have gone and done this, so it is now fixed. Overall I took a lot away from this session and am happy with how it went. I am thanful we had it because it helped me realized there are some things I need to change and add.

Adobe Session 3

Unfortunately I was unable to attend this session due to being ill, which really stressed me out because I knew it was important. Luckily I am going to meet with one of my course mates when I am better so they can catch me up on what I missed. Will update this post once I do that.

I found sketch up sort of simple. Obviously it is confusing because it is new, but it kind of reminds me of a video game. While I sort of understand how to use the program, I am very confused as to what we are supposed to be creating for our PR package. I suppose we are supposed to create something in correlation with our event, but I am not sure. I think I am going to create a booth at my event that will be used to hand out posters.

This is what I created:

Session 9

For this session we met with Fiona in order to discuss what is expected for the PPD section of our hand-in. We then had the rest of our session to work on our PPD, which was nice because I realized I had much more to do then I thought. Because this is a digital hand-in, all of our research work/ SDS work will be featured on our myblogs. I have the work, I am just having slight difficulties figuring out exactly how I want to organize everything on my website. I believe the best way for me to go about this is to just take a day and do it all. I am happy that this term I have stayed up to date on doing my blog posts, so that relieves a lot of stress, since all I really have to do is find the best way to organize my work.

During this session I also realized that I had missed a reflection post, so all my other post numbers were off. It was really confusing for me tp figure out which one was incorrect and missing, but luckily I was able to find out and correct the problem. Overall I would say that this session was very informative and productive.

Session 8

For this session we worked on our PPD and individually met with Carlyn in order to check in on how we were doing on our Zine. This was an incredibly beneficial session because it allowed us time to get our work done. I do struggle getting into deep focus mode when in class, however I was proud of myself for getting a lot done today. During my time with Carlyn we discussed where I was at with my Zine and what I could improve. We both agreed that one of my shoots no longer matched the overall aesthetic of my zine and that I should remove it. I completely agreed with this because I had done the shoot for SDS over break, which was before I had my concept set. Although this is a minor set back I know it will be fine and doing this will make a positive impact on my zine in the end.

Session Seven

For this session we worked on our PR package. We worked on a creating a written description of our PR event, then worked on creating invitations and press release statement for the event. This class was helpful in terms of being able to get lots of work done, however I was not able to get into deep focus. I was able to finish my written description and start the layout for my invitation, but I wish I was able to get much more done. I struggle focussing when it comes to writing assignments, which is something I am working on getting better at. I think I can focus on writing more when I am alone, because when I am with people I distract myself and do not stick to the task at hand. I am going to continue to work on this and hopefully will improve.

PR Event Description

My Zine is called eighteen because it calls out the unrealistic beauty standards Seventeen magazine creates for young women. The zine features multiple sexist advertisements from nineteen-sixties and seventies Seventeen magazines that have been drawn on with responses to the insanity of the ads. For the PR event I want to take the edited advertisements and plaster them all over the barbican. In order to advertise this event we will send invitations out to many different influencers to come and take photos of the adverts shown all over the Barbican. This will draw in more people to come see the posters at the Barbican and get people talking.

Adobe Session 2

During this session we learned how to create a simple animation using Illustrator and Premier. I found this task extremely difficult at first since I am very new to premier. Creating the illustration was easy for me since I am more versed at Illustrator, so that was nice. Although this task was difficult for me, I think it was very beneficial because it forced me to work with premier more, which in turn helped me learn more about it. I still find premier very difficult and confusing to use, but just like all the other adobe programs, I know I will get better with time and practice. I just have to continue to force myself to use the program. I think a lot of the times when I start using a new program, I have a hard time forcing myself to use it because I want to revert back and use the programs I know and am comfortable with. That is something I just have to work on. Overall I am very pleased with how the session turned out. I felt very proud when I finally created the animation and although I have a long way to go until I am comfortable and skilled at using premier, I am proud with the slight progress I made during this session.
